Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (Japanese: 新・世界樹の迷宮 ミレニアムの少女 New Labyrinth of the World Tree: The Millennium Girl) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, released in Japan in November 2014, in North America in August 2015, and in Europe in February 2016. It is a remake of the first game in the series, Etrian Odyssey and is the fifth title in the Etrian Odyssey series overall, and the second entry for the Nintendo 3DS.
Story
"The hero is a young Highlander, a member of one of the many clans from the Highland area, who receives an unusual request and travels to the town of Etria.
"The request was to 'investigate an abnormality occurring in Etria.'
"The town's ruling council has sent for a Highlander to search for the source of a series of mysterious earthquakes and sounds that has begun to trouble the city in recent months. In the course of his investigation, he meets an amnesiac girl named Frederica.
"A trio of researchers from the Midgard Library, an institution several settlements over, has come to Etica to seek out the same abnormalities. After a chance encounter with the three, they introduce themselves as Simon, Arthur, and Raquna. It soon becomes apparent that there is a need for all of them to delve into the challenging wilderness of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, which has some deep connection with a set of strange ruins.
"What could these abnormalities be? All the keys to this puzzle remain locked in the memories of the girl..."
Gameplay
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl is the first game in the series to have two gameplay modes, Classic and Story. Classic Mode is the same as with other entries, with custom characters and maps. Story Mode is similar to other RPG series in that there's an expansive story with cutscenes and preset characters with voice acting, but players will still have to draw out their own dungeon maps as with other Etrian Odyssey games. There are also three difficulty settings: Picnic which gives an easy gameplay experience, Normal for a moderately difficult yet manageable gameplay experience, and Expert which replicates the difficulty of the original DS version.
Gameplay Changes
- Choose between Story Mode to experience a new journey with a fixed party, or Classic Mode to build your own team.
- Introduces the Highlander class as the Story Mode protagonist, and brings in the Gunner from Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard for a Story Mode exclusive character.
- Story Mode also includes Gladsheim as a separate five-floor dungeon with unique enemies and bosses.
- Retains most changes and mechanics from Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City and Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, including separating quest items from the main inventory, quest EXP, enemy formations, improved mapping tools, auto-walk paths, FOE/boss overworld models.
- Revisions to skill trees and stat spreads of each class. Their skill tree is also displayed in a visual flow chart as opposed to a list.
- Change a character's available skill sets (without changing their stat spread) with the Alter Class function at the Explorers Guild.
- Purchase temporary expedition buffs with the help of your companions at the guildhouse.
- Requests that normally require specific classes have alternative, albeit more tedious, solutions.
Persistent Changes
- Correctly placed and oriented two-way shortcut icons now turn yellow once unlocked.
- Correctly placed gather icons turn dim when the player has already harvested from them for the day, and reset once midnight arrives.
- Introduces a Fast walking and battle speed.
Grimoire Stones
- Main article: Grimoire Stone
Grimoire Stones are the mechanic for class customization in this game. Acquired from chests while exploring or from Grimoire Chances in-battle, Grimoire Stones can contain anywhere between 1 to 7 skills and can contain a mixture of skills learned by the character who generated them, and enemies they are facing in battle. Each character can only equip 1 Grimoire Stone at a time.
Grimoire Stones, on initial generation, cannot be used and will take up inventory space, and once brought into the guildhouse, will have their contents identified and stored for safekeeping. Grimoire Stones can also be customized through synthesis, where multiple stones are merged together, inheriting a combination of skills from their components.

Development
Reception
Having sold 90,297 copies in the first week of release in Japan, Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl received positive critical reception from reviewers. Within a month of release, the game sold more than 114,000 copies worldwide.
The gameplay and story were generally well-received by critics, though aspects of its new characters were seen as stereotypical, such as Frederica's amnesia. Its single save slot was also criticized, as it did not allow the player to have one save for each mode. Untold was seen as easier by default than the original, with various quality-of-life features such as an automap feature, being able to sprint, and an adjustable difficulty setting. The decrease in difficulty had mixed reactions: While many critics praised the additions, they were criticized by Kill Screen, who claimed that they spoiled the intentional retro-style challenge the original had focused on.
The existence of a story itself was seen by some critics as unnecessary, given the original's purposeful lack of it. The added dialog was described as slowing down the game's pacing, and the preset characters decreased player freedom by preventing them from unlocking certain skills until later in the game. Others believed that the story did well on elaborated certain plot points from the original game, and thought the existence of these preset characters did well to ease newcomers to the franchise into the game's open-ended gameplay.
In a review of Etrian Odyssey Untold in Black Gate, Josh Bycer said "Etrian Odyssey Untold does feel like the definitive edition of one of my favorite series in recent years."
