Etrian Odyssey Nexus (Japanese: 世界樹の迷宮X Labyrinth of the World Tree Cross) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, released in Japan in August 2018, and internationally in February 2019. It is the overall eighth title in the Etrian Odyssey series, and the fifth and final entry on the Nintendo 3DS. As the name suggests, it is a "crossover" of various elements from throughout the series, with several playable classes, dungeons, and gameplay elements returning from past games.
Story
The archipelago of Lemuria was home to one of the many civilizations that were claimed by the worldwide Calamity. Taking inspiration and genetic data from the Yggdrasils of Etria, High Lagaard, Armoroad and Tharsis, Lemuria developed its own Yggdrasils and prospered as a haven in the time following the Calamity. However, this also vanished to time, leaving only tales of a treasure hidden beneath the massive tree, said to bring prosperity to whoever finds it.
To this end, princess Persephone issues a call to all adventurers from the surrounding lands to aid her in her quest to discover the treasure that sleeps beneath the Yggdrasil. All adventurers answering her call gather upon Maginia, a small town situated aboard a giant aircraft, as they explore the landmasses of Lemuria on this grand quest.
Gameplay
In common with previous games in the series, in Etrian Odyssey Nexus, you can create a team with up to five characters to use as you progress through the game. The main gameplay consists of fighting monsters and mapping out each area as you progress with optional quests and items that you can find.
Exploration takes place across the different islands surrounding Lemuria's Yggdrasil. Instead of strata, most of the levels are situated in dungeons that are three floors long, while the four shrines critical to the plot are five floors long (barring the first one you visit). Along the way, the player can discover optional side dungeons that only have one floor but may be challenging if visited too early.
Overworld gathering spots can also be found which yield materials found in the neighboring dungeons. Sometimes these can be occupied by overworld FOEs, which must be defeated before the party can harvest from them again.
Gameplay changes
- The interface aesthetic and most gameplay mechanics (including player stats and item upgrades) are recycled from Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth. Party members use the Force Boost and Break system from Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight, and the skill tree and subclassing system from Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan.
- You can now freely change the portrait, voicebank, and custom title of a party member without needing to Rest or Retire them. Any portrait can be assigned to any class as well.
- The portraits of all returning classes and portraits from Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth can be recolored.
- The level cap now starts at 99 and goes up to 130 by beating the Storm Emperor, Blizzard King, and Great Dragon. Stat and skill point bonuses from retiring have been changed to accommodate the raised caps.
- You can now invest multiple skill points in a single skill in one go. When unlocking a skill that has investment requirements, the game can automatically invest in the minimum requirements to unlock that skill, if you have enough reserve skill points to do so.

Classes and characters

Etrian Odyssey Nexus features a total of 19 playable classes with 18 returning from previous games in the series and the Hero class being new to this game.
- Hero
- The one class unique to this game. Heroes are flexible all-rounders that can attack, defend, or heal, and their signature skills generate afterimages that repeat the skill used to generate them.
- Protector
- The Protectors of Etria reprise their role as the defensive class, with abilities that reduce or even block incoming damage, and can now heal the allies they're protecting. In addition to drawing enemy attention with skills inherited from the Fortresses, they have expanded their defensive boons to encompass both physical and magical defense.
- Medic
- The Medics of Etria are the healing specialists in this game, taking on the best healing skills from previous generations of Medics, and splicing it with skills from the Botanists to function more proactively in battle.
- Ronin
- The Ronin from Etria have further honed their stances using techniques from previous generations in addition to skills from the Masurao. Not only can they assume their stances with an attack skill, they also commence the battle in their best stance. Their attack skills can be used with any stance, but now deliver critical hits if used during a matching stance. However, their stronger techniques penalize them by shortening or even cancelling their stance.
- Survivalist
- The archers from Etria are some of the fastest among the cast, allowing them to manipulate the speed of their allies and the enemies. They also are experts at navigation and have utility skills for traversing the dungeons.
- Highlander
- Highlanders are proficient at spear techniques and are adept at a number of different roles, but often trade their HP to use their skills.
- Gunner
- These marksmen hailing from High Lagaard possess incredible firepower and can disable the enemies with well-placed shots. They perform well in the back line, but are quite slow and inaccurate.
- War Magus
- The war magi of High Lagaard can use swords or staves, with a unique mastery that lets them use skills for either weapon without needing to switch. Their healing skills trigger at the start and end of the turn, letting them aid their allies before enemies attack and patch up after damage is done.
- Sovereign
- The nobles from Armoroad specialize in aiding the party with their order buffs and can remove buffs or debuffs to heal the party and attack the enemy. Their offensive and defensive buffs influence both physical and elemental attack and defense, and they can gain the ability to instantly re-apply any buff they dispel from their allies.
- Ninja
- The ninjas from Armoroad are adept with knives to harass and disable the opposition, and their claim to fame is the ability to create a fully functional copy of themselves as a sixth party member.
- Zodiac
- The masters of the stars are the sole magic-based elemental damage specialist in this game, and combine the techniques of the Runemasters and Warlocks to handle different enemy formations.
- Farmer
- While the Farmers of Armoroad are still more specialized to gathering resources rather than participating in battle, they have devised a few new tricks that improve their battle performance through efficient item use.
- Shogun
- The dual-wielding generals from Armoroad retain most of their skill set, filling an in-between as a situational buffer, commander, and front line damage dealer.
- Landsknecht
- The Landsknechts of Tharsis have a role focused on going first in battle and aiding their allies who move after them, with a few improvements and extensions to their Link and Break skills.
- Nightseeker
- These shadowy assassins deal in inflicting ailments with throwing knives before moving in for the kill. They also have improved on their Shadow Cloak defensive skill, expanding into several skills that improve or synergize with it.
- Arcanist
- The Vessels from Tharsis are specialized in setting down and manipulating magic circles that inflict ailments and binds to enemy groups.
- Imperial
- The Imperials from Tharsis bring their massive drive blades to deliver incredible bursts of damage, but have to cool down from their blades overheating.
- Pugilist
- The Pugilists from Aeonia are focused on their Barrage Brawler mastery, focused on disabling their enemies through successive punches.
- Harbinger
- The Harbingers from Aeonia are focused on their Deathguard mastery, manipulating their Miasma to weaken the opposition and heal their teammates.
