Seafaring
Seafaring | |

![]() |
Seafaring is a game mechanic exclusive to Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City, focused on the party exploring the seas surrounding Armoroad to re-establish trade routes with the neighboring nations that were lost to the Calamity. While seafaring is not required to progress the main plot, you are expected to progress this side mode in tandem.
Overview

You set sail from Inver Port in Armoroad, where you first have to decide on your rations and ship parts. Rations determine how far you can travel at sea before needing to return, and ship parts affect the ship's mobility, fishing yield, and even combat capabilities. The total cost for rations and ship costs will be deducted from your funds the moment you set sail, and if your ship gets wrecked by whirlpools or combat with other pirate ships, further costs will be deducted for repairs.
While out at sea, you are given a unique sea map where you have a field of view that restricts what you can draw on. Moving forward consumes a turn, while rotating your ship or sailing along currents does not. You typically move forward one square per turn, though with certain ship upgrades you can move up to two or three squares per turn, trading precision for speed. Every turn you expend causes two in-game hours to pass, and you can easily spend a few days traveling to points of interest. Examining even innocuous landmasses can also yield items like special rations or ship parts. Any items found on seafaring expeditions are tracked in your cargo log.
Once you get close to a point of interest, the narration makes note of it and the game marks it with a flag. Making the trip to the point of interest unlocks Sea Quests tied to that location, on top of a reward from the harbor master. You can also revisit the point of interest to unlock a sidequest, usually involving retrieving items from elsewhere along the seas. Establishing trade routes with nearby cities will also cause friendly trade ships to spawn, who will offer rare items in exchange for supplies from the Labyrinth.
Fishing
To fish, move your ship over the fish icon to harvest. Rare fish are indicated with golden fish icons. Schools of fish will move one square for each turn you spend, so precise planning will be needed to catch them. Some ship parts can alter the rate of rare fish appearing, while others increase fishing yield or make it more convenient.
Sometimes tanniyn appear as large fish icons that take up a 2x2 space, and will require multiple fishing attempts before they go down and yield great returns, but while engaging them they can randomly wreck your ship in retaliation, cutting your skirmish short.
Pirate ships roam the area, using the purple FOE icons on the sea map, and can cut your expedition short if they collide with your ship. However, you can obtain cannons for your ship that allow you to shoot them down. The cannons' range is quite short, only reaching the square directly in front, and firing them consumes a turn, prompting everything else to move accordingly.
Points of Interest & Sea Quests
Once you have arrived at the point of interest, you unlock three Sea Quests tied to that location, accessible from Inver Port.
Sea Quests are little more than an immediately-accessible boss fight. If you tackle them solo, you will pick between one of three quests tied to the boss, which have different AI companions automatically assigned to the group. Fill in the rest with your guild members before you can begin. During battle, you control only your guild members, while your AI companions act independently and carry their own stock of healing items. While your companions become increasingly stronger to match the harder Sea Quests, they cannot contribute to your Limit Skills, none of them will come with a subclass, and you will never find a Shogun or Yggdroid as an AI companion.
After defeating the boss, the boss EXP will be distributed only among your participating guild members. Defeating a Sea Quest boss for the first time unlocks a Limit Skill, while regular first-time completion of any Sea Quest will award you a unique piece of equipment.
If you select the multiplayer mode, you can link up with up to four other players, each one bringing forward only one guild member to the party. You can only link up with other players through local DS Wi-Fi (DS version) or through the Internet, but without cross-platform compatibility (HD remake). Each player will control the guild member they put forth, and combatants' actions are initiated once everyone has confirmed their move.
Points of interest are as follows:

Epic Glossary
The Epic Glossary are documents found during your voyages, detailing legends and history of the game's world. These do not have any practical function, but some contain hints on how to obtain some of the best equipment in the game.
- Epigraph Piece
- In the depths of the sea, an evil force has lurked in the darkness.
- According to only a few witnesses, the creature is gigantic, with slime-covered tentacles that resemble squids and jellyfish.
- To quote an ancient sage, "Gaze long enough into the darkness, and the darkness shall gaze at you..."
- Never forget that when studying evil, evil is studying you!
- Tome Page
- The Dark Forest... The other researchers and I discovered the island north of Armoroad.
- It is dense with foliage, rejecting all but the most intrepid explorers. Yet we have already found ancient organisms, long thought extinct.
- Still stranger, they have evolved. The isle is like a flask, with the flames of chaos boiling beneath it.
- And in the depths of that forest, was the most dreadful beast I have ever seen. I called it "Manticore."
- Weapon Tome I
- There was a time when the seas were not troubled by pirates. Back then, not everyone recognized the sea as the dangerous place that it is.
- But one man's rise to infamy and then to legend changed all that single-handedly.
- "Jolly Roger" began as a fisherman with a rapier, but by the end, he had sacked cities across the world.
- Even after his death, the voices of those that fear him linger. Rumors of his ghostly ship attacking the living are not so far-fetched...
- Weapon Tome II
- The Trade City of Damavand... It is a city known for hinging its prosperity on the power of a sealed dragon since ancient times.
- The dragon is also responsible for a special weapon, with a very special origin.
- The Sword called Hrunting was made from the dragon's talon, and no words can describe how sharp its blade truly is.
- It is even said that the blade can be restored with dragon's blood...
- Weapon Tome III
- Little is known about the pirate called Galateia, who once disguised herself as a man.
- What we do know, is that she was very cruel and an expert with her rapier. Her sword, the Ice Fang, is said to have felled hundreds.
- Once, a subordinate asked her where she obtained such a blade, and she answered in one word: "Aeaea."
- If that blade is what you seek, the legendary ice sword, perhaps there are clues in Aeaea...
- Weapon Tome IV
- A swordsman called the One-Eyed Dragon once hailed from the west. His katana was the renowned Kurikara.
- His odd name was derived from the battle against a sea dragon, who took one of his eyes.
- Perhaps as revenge, he forged a weapon from its bone splinters, and thus, the Kurikara was born.
- But, when One-Eyed Dragon died, he returned the katana to the sea... If you seek the blade, first, seek the sea dragon.
- Weapon Tome V
- There was once a sea monster that plagued the seas of the ocean city, attacking many ships.
- It was a squid-like creature, both giant and fearsome, that used its tentacles to commit the most unthinkable atrocities.
- But then the Calamity struck, and along with part of the ocean city, the monster disappeared as well.
- From its tentacles, the cursed spear Rhongomyniad was forged... They say its white blade gleamed eerily, and trickled blood...
- Weapon Tome VI
- Once there was a wild king, born and raised in the jungle. He was called Greystroke, and he was friend to all manner of beasts.
- I visited him in the Dark Forest once, and I witnessed him tame the beast I called the Manticore.
- I noticed, though, that the great evil beast bore a dimly shining black chain around its enormous neck.
- It was called the Beast King's Chain. This would help you, should you ever encounter an evil beast.
- Weapon Tome VII
- Lightning... Some theorize that it is an expression of a god's anger, to be dreaded.
- There is even a dreadful tale of a lightning bolt manifesting as a Dragon, and assaulting a city.
- But the city was saved by one soldier who slayed it, and then forged a hammer from its horn.
- The soldier called it Ukonvasara, and unified the destroyed city under its banner as they rebuilt.
- Weapon Tome VIII
- It is said that there once as a god of the sea in this world...
- According to the stories, he was a raging god, with a golden spear that sundered the sea with storms, and sent massive waves to shore.
- But in another region, some believed he was a fire god, watching over the world as a flame burning beneath the water.
- As for his trident, they say it was made from the fangs of a gigantic sea dragon.
- Weapon Tome IX
- It is said that in an ancient battle, one soldier survived. He was neither brave nor heroic, he was simply clad in magic armor that could withstand any attack.
- The price? He made a deal to keep it a secret so long as he had it.
- He kept the secret safe, until one day, he drunkenly let it slip.
- He claimed to have obtained the armor from a city constructed by otherworldly beings... and was never seen again.
- Weapon Tome X
- An old minstrel's tale tells of "the world's strongest sword," called the Dragonbane.
- It was a tale long told to guilds, until a knight stood up one day, claiming to know of a sword that was stronger still.
- He first explained to doubting adventurers the connection of the Dragonbane to the three dragons of the elements: fire, ice and lightning.
- But more interestingly, he claimed the presence of a greater dragon, guardian of a greater blade...
