Overview
- Before you squats an abomination born from your most terrible nightmares. The monster dwelling in those blood soaked depths must be the labyrinth's final enemy! Unsheathing your weapons, you prepare to face the heart of the labyrinth!
The Yggdrasil Core (previously known as Primevil) is the ultimate superboss of Etrian Odyssey, described as the "heart of the labyrinth" and the core from which the Yggdrasil Labyrinth grows from.
While little is divulged about the Core's origins in the DS version of the first game, Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl expands significantly on it. The Yggdrasil Labyrinth is part of the Yggdrasil Project, meant to rejuvenate the world ruined by the Calamity. The Yggdrasil Project involves planting seven giant trees (becoming the Yggdrasils of their own region) to absorb the pollution from the ravaged world in hopes that the surface will one day become inhabitable again.
However, absorbing all that pollution comes at a cost, as the core of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth would mutate into the monstrosity, which will threaten to run rampant on the new world should it escape containment. The failsafe is a Gungnir unit installed into each tree, meant to destroy the tree and core to avert another calamity. However, the party discovers that a Gungnir firing off will cause massive collateral damage, with the Gungnir near Gotham having already destroyed that village. Thus, they seek an alternative, leading them to Visil who hands them the Yggdra Vaccine.
In the finale of Story Mode, the Yggdra Vaccine initially works, greatly weakening the Core and allowing the party to seemingly defeat it, only for the Core to regenerate and threaten them again. As a last-ditch effort, Kupala offers her life to empower the party enough for them to destroy the Yggdrasil Core themselves.

Trivia
- Primevil's battle theme, The Battlefield that Never Sleeps, was not used in Etrian Odyssey with the standard stratum boss theme playing instead. Etrian Odyssey HD plays this track during the Primevil fight as intended.
