Grimoire Stones
Grimoire Stones are a class of items and a game mechanic that appear in Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight. They largely allow characters to obtain skills from outside their normal skill tree, including skills used by enemies.

Equipping Grimoire Stones

Each character can only equip one Grimoire Stone at a time. A Grimoire Stone can contain up to seven different skills and allow the user to equip the weapon(s) listed on it. These skills can be a mixture of skills available to any playable class, and even enemy skills. When reviewing an enemy in the Monstrous Codex, enemy skills that can be recorded in a Grimoire Stone are marked in yellow.
If a character already knows a skill and equips a Grimoire Stone that contains the same, only the higher of the two will take effect. However, for certain passive skills, equipping a Grimoire Stone that contains a duplicate will instead cause the higher of the two skills to apply its bonus twice.[1]
- Landsknecht's Axe Mastery, Dark Hunter's Whip Mastery, Alchemist's Formula Mastery, Survivalist's Bow Mastery, Ronin's Katana Mastery, Highlander's Spear Mastery, Gunner's Gun Mastery, Protector's Shield Mastery, Dark Hunter's Wrath Might, Survivalist's Efficiency, Hexer's Staggering Word, and the Take/Chop/Mine skills are all subject to this effect.[2]
- For example, if the Highlander Character has the Spear Mastery skill at Level 10, equipping a Grimoire Stone containing a Level 1 Spear Mastery Skill will apply the Level 10 bonus twice, leading to a net damage bonus of 115% × 115% = 132.25%.
Generating Grimoire Stones

Grimoire Stones can be found in treasure chests in the labyrinth, but a bulk of them are generated in battle. When a character with a Grimoire Stone receives a Grimoire Chance, this means they have a chance of generating a Grimoire Stone if the act during that battle. If generation is successful, the Grimoire Stone is added to the inventory in addition to the usual spoils in battle. The skills that will be present in the Grimoire Stone will draw from the generating character's own skill set (counting their own skills and their Grimoire skills) and the enemy they're fighting, but the level of the skill in the Grimoire Stone cannot exceed the character's own skill level. (e.g. If the character has ATK Up Level 4, they cannot generate a Grimoire Stone containing ATK Up Level 5 or higher.) Only one Grimoire Stone per character can be generated per battle.
Once you have obtained a Grimoire Stone, the skills it contains are unknown until brought back to town and appraised at the Guildhouse. Unidentified Grimoire Stones will take up inventory space, but their appearance can hint at the quality of the skills they contain.[3]
- Bronze Grimoire Stones contain one to four skill slots. Silver Grimoire Stones contain five or six slots. Gold Grimoire Stones contain seven slots.
- Dark Grimoire Stones contain at least one enemy skill, and can have any number of slots.
- Imperfect Grimoire Stones contain only skills of level 5 or lower. Slightly Damaged Grimoire stones contain at least one skill of level 6 to 9. Flawless Grimoire Stones contain at least one level 10 skill.
If the player has Guild Cards recorded, they can generate a Grimoire Stone from the featured character, creating a Grimoire Stone with random skills selected from the featured character's own. This can only be done once per card.
Any Grimoire Stones in your inventory upon arrival to the Guildhouse are identified before being moved into Guildhouse storage. The Guildhouse can only hold up to 99 identified Grimoire Stones.
Grimoire Synthesis
Grimoire Stones can be customized through Grimoire Synthesis, where three Grimoire Stones are consumed to make a new one. The first Grimoire Stone selected determines the skill slots in the product, the first and second Grmoires determine the pool of skills you can select from, while the third Grimoire Stone selected determines the weapon proficiency the Grimoire Stone will grant. After selecting the three Grimoire Stones used in synthesis, you select a combination of skills from the first and second Grimoire Stones to fill out the slots in the product. Duplicate copies of a skill cannot be selected.
Seven Kings Grimoire

The King Grimoire Stones can be generated after completing a battle with Fenrir, Cernunnos, Queen Ant, Corotrangul, Iwaoropenelep, Manticore, or Alraune. The process of generating the King Grimoire is separate from the usual Grimoire Stone generation process and is added to your inventory as a bonus reward from battle after completing it, provided you fulfil the conditions for it.
The conditions for generating a King Grimoire is tied to the following parameters. First count how many of these end in a 7, defining this total as X:[4]
- Ventured Days
- Enemies Hunted (ignoring the boss you're fighting)
- Walked (including the step taken to start the boss fight)
- Total En
- Owned Grimoire Stones (includes those in inventory)
- Owned Guild Cards
The King Grimoire generation formula is
Essentially, if at least five of these parameters end in a 7, the King Grimoire is guaranteed to be obtained the end of the battle. It contains a single Level 10 unique skill that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Collecting all seven King Grimoires and merging them, step-by-step, into a 7-slot Grimore Stone, forms the uniquely-named 7 Kings Grimoire and earns the Grimoire Medal on the player's own Guild Card.
It is possible to obtain King Grimoire skills by generating a Grimoire Stone from a Guild Card QR code that has a King Grimoire skill on the featured character. Generating a Stone with King Grimoire skills this way is the only way to obtain King Grimoire skills of a level lower than 10.
Boss | Grimoire Skill | Effect |
---|---|---|
Fenrir | Wolf Pack | Raises the party's physical and elemental attack this turn. |

Equipping Grimoire Stones

Grimoire Stones are now managed at the Ducal Restaurant.
Each Grimoire Stone now only contains a single skill, and while each character starts off being able to equip only one Grimoire Stone at a time, this cap increases every tenth level, to a maximum of six Grimoire Stones on a level 50+ character. You cannot equip two Grimoire Stones that share the same skill. If a Grimoire Stone contains a skill that requires a specific weapon, the equipping character immediately gets to wield the associated weapon.
Some Grimoire Stones generated in battle or obtained from trading with customers of the Restaurant contain bonus passive abilities that offer minor boons to the user.
If a character has learned a skill and equips a Grimoire Stone that contains the same skill, the Grimoire Stone's skill level will be added to the character's own. This allows the character's skills to go past their limit, leading to skills potentially reaching level 20. Skill level data for levels past the usual maximum are highlighted in orange on Skill pages.
Generating Grimoire Stones

Like before, Grimoire Stones are generated in battle when a character takes an action during a Grimoire Chance, and now there is no limit to the number of Grimoire Stones that a character can generate in a single battle. If a character gets to act multiple times through skills like Double Action or Double Strike, they can generate more than one Grimoire Stone in a single Grimoire Chance. Once generated, the player immediately gets to see what skill the Grimoire Stone contains, though the skill level and any bonus passive effect will be revealed at the end of the battle. Grimoire Stones no longer take up inventory space, and are immediately stored in a separate Grimoire Stone storage, which can now hold up to 400 Grimoire Stones.

In addition to general Grimoire Chances that randomly draw between the character's and enemy's skills, there are variations of Grimoire Chances that favour certain kinds of skills that will be generated when that character acts.
- Active - Generates a Grimoire Stone with one of the combatant's active skills.
- Passive - Generates a Grimoire Stone with one of the combatant's passive skills.
- Enemy - Generates a Grimoire Stone with one of the enemy's active skills.
- Premium - Generates a high-level Grimoire Stone that is guaranteed to contain the skill being used. (Doing any other action instead picks randomly from the character's skill set)
Occasionally, Grimoire Fevers can trigger in battle, where every party member gets a Grimoire Chance. If three Grimoire Fevers trigger in succession, the whole party gets a guaranteed Premium Grimoire Chance during the third Fever.
Bonus Passives
Occasionally, a Grimoire Stone comes generated with a bonus passive icon. There are three grades to these icons, getting stronger with additional stars on them. Each passive effect stacks additively across all Grimoire Stones equipped by the character.
- Cut/Stab/Bash/Fire/Ice/Volt - Increases the corresponding damage type by 2/4/6%.
- Ailment/Bind - Increases infliction rate of all ailments/binds by 2/4/6%.
- Grimoire - Increases the odds of triggering a Grimoire Chance by 5/10/15%.
- Rare Enemy - Increases the odds of encountering a Rare Breed enemy by 1/2/3%.
- Ailment/Bind Recovery - Reduces recovery time from all ailments/binds by 2/4/6%.
- Drop Rate - Increases the odds of additional copies of enemy drops by 2/4/6%.
- Victory HP/TP - After winning a battle, restores a portion of max HP (3/7/15%) or TP (1/2/3%).
Grimoire Stones from Legendary Adventures come with unique bonus passives that are not available during regular Grimoire generation.
- Auto-Heal - Obtained from Legendary Protectors, Sovereigns, or Beasts. 20% chance of restoring 50% max HP whenever user loses HP.
- Heal Up - Obtained from Legendary Survivalists or Medics. Increases non-fixed healing received by the user by 50%.
- Force Up - Obtained from Legendary Dark Hunters, Hexers, or Fafnirs. User gains 30 Force at the start of battle.
- Grimoire Level Up - Obtained from Legendary Troubadours or Ronin. Increases all Grimoire skill levels of the user by 3, to a maximum of 10.
- TP Regen - Obtained from Legendary Alchemists or War Magi. Restores 2% max TP at the end of each turn in battle.
- TP Recharge - Obtained from Legendary Landsknechts, Highlanders, or Gunners. After using a skill that consumes TP, 25% chance of regaining the expended TP.
Grimoire Trade and Recycle
- Main article: Labyrinth Cuisine
Once the player has invested enough in developing High Lagaard, adventurers will start visiting the Restaurant and leave behind their own Grimoire Stones for trade. A successful advertising campaign will also increase the number of trades available, and can be influenced by the types of adventurers you market to. On occasion, legendary adventurers can bring forth high-level Grimoire Stones that contain unique bonus passives that are not available through regular Grimoire Stone generation.
To obtain a Grimoire Stone through trade, you will need to match or exceed the weight of the Grimoire Stone on offer using your excess Grimoire Stones. The weight of the Grimoire Stone scales exponentially with its skill's level. For example, it may take a few level 4 Grimoire Stones to equate a level 5 Grimoire Stone, but you will need many more level 1 Grimoire Stones to match that weight. Grimoire Stones with bonus passives from legendary guest adventurers are double their usual weight compared to other Grimoire Stones of similar level.
If you have any Guild Cards recorded, you can trade for a specific Grimoire Stone held by the characters featured on the Guild Card. The "Project Valkyrie" Guild Cards, accessible here and here, present an array of QR codes with characters holding max-level class skills and passives to eliminate the randomness involved in Grimoire generation.
Alternatively, if no favorable trades are available, you can deposit unused Grimoire Stones in the Grimoire Recycle function, spend time in the labyrinth, and return to the Restaurant to find a single random Grimoire Stone exchanged for the Grimoire Stones you have chosen to recycle. This function follows the same weight rules as the Grimoire Trade function, and the game will inform you of the skill level of the Grimoire Stone you will receive before committing to recycle your Grimoire Stones.
