Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth (Japanese: 世界樹の迷宮V 長き神話の果て Labyrinth of the World Tree V: End of the Long Myth) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, released in Japan in August 2016, and internationally in 2017. It is the overall seventh title in the Etrian Odyssey series, and the fourth entry on the Nintendo 3DS.
Story
- This is the story of Yggdrasil, the world tree in the land of Arcania.
- Children of men pass down an ancient fable: "The power of the gods will be granted there..."
- Disciples of magic study an archaic myth: "The great mysteries shall be answered there..."
- Descendants of warriors recite their folklore: "The ultimate techniques can be mastered there..."
- Nomads of the plains exchange a fairy tale: “The lost treasures must be slumbering there..."
- From all across the land of Arcania, each culture pursues its own legends.
- They journey to Yggdrasil, yearning to reach the top and meet their destinies.
Gameplay
In common with previous games in the series, in Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth, you can create a team with up to five characters to use as you progress through the game. The main gameplay consists of fighting monsters and mapping out each area as you progress with optional quests and items that you can find.
Gameplay Changes
- The main gameplay loop returns to exploring a single dungeon with five-floor strata.
- Mapping has a greater impact on gameplay; turning in well-drawn maps of each floor allows the player to commence their expedition from a higher floor without needing a Geomagnetic Pole.
- Exploration events now give experience to the active party.
- Gather ingredients from various parts of the labyrinth for cooking at campfire sites to create food items. Food is stored in a separate inventory tab and can be consumed in the labyrinth outside of combat for healing.
- Revision to stat and damage formulas
- Each character now has six stats: STR, INT, VIT, WIS, AGI, LUC. Stats now cap at 255, and retire bonuses have been adjusted for this new stat cap.
- Physical damage calculates between ATK and DEF, while magic defense calculates between MAT (magic attack) and MDF (magic defense). Enemies also have these stats to create a distinction between physical and magical resistances.
- Stats have equal weight to influencing these damage/defense stats, giving importance to updating equipment. STR influences ATK, INT influences MAT, VIT influences DEF, WIS influences MDF.
- In addition to assigning a race, class, and portrait during character creation, you can now customize your character's color palette and in-battle voice clips.
- Each class's skill tree is split into Basic and Mastery. Upon unlocking Mastery classes, each class can pick between one of two Mastery specializations that focuses themselves toward a specific combat role.
- Mastery class names can also be customized.
- Summons take up a third row separate from the party, which can accommodate up to three.
Forging
- Main article: Forging
Rather than customize a weapon's capabilities, forging a weapon unlocks its passive ability, and further reinforcement increases the weapon's ATK/MAT and the strength of its passive. Some weapons, often weapons forged from FOE or boss drops, contain unique active skills instead of passive ones. Once a weapon has reached its maximum forge level of +5, it can be recycled for Bronze/Silver/Gold Shards based on the kind of material used to make and forge the weapon. Ten Shards merge into an Ingot of the matching type, and Ingots can be used as substitutes for the material costs of forging.
Union Skills
- Main article: Union Skill
Bearing resemblance to Limit Skills in Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City, Union Skills see the party team up to execute powerful skills.
Each party member learns a set of basic Union Skills, and they can invest skill points to learn race-exclusive Union Skills. All it takes for a Union Skill to be executed is for the initiating party member to have a full Union Gauge and to know that skill, and any other participants cooperating for that skill will have their Union Gauge emptied afterwards.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth features a total of 10 playable classes, all making their series debuts.
Unique to Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is the concept of different playable races. There are four races in the game – Earthlains, Celestrians, Therians, and Brounis – with each race having a number of classes associated with it. When creating a new character, players first choose the character's race, and then their class. Races affect the stats and appearance customisation options of a character, as well as which race skills they have access to. While a character, upon creation, cannot have a class their race does not have default access to, it is possible to access another race's classes after creation via the Alter Class function at the Explorers Guild.
Races
- Earthlain
- The most populous race in Aeonia, the humanoid Earthlains are physically hardy, possessing some of the best HP, VIT, and LUC among the four races. Their race-unique passives are also focused on gathering resources from the labyrinth.
- Celestrian
- The elf-like Celestrians hail from the Tower of Sorcery north from Iorys, and have the highest INT and TP among the four classes but are physically frail. Their race-unique passives let them use their attunement with magic to resist the threats in the labyrinth.
- Therian
- The part-beast Therians hail from the woods outside Iorys, and have the best STR and AGI growth among the four races. Their race-unique passives make the most of their physical might and hunting experience.
- Brouni
- The dwarf-like Brouni hail from the Chryse Prairie and have a well-rounded stat growth, with the best WIS of the classes but sacrifice STR and LUC. Their race-unique passives improve their ability to support and heal the party.
Classes
- Fencer
- Fast swordsmen who can slice or stab depending on how they wield their weapons. Their Chain skills let them follow-up on their allies' stab or elemental attacks. Fencers can specialize into Phantom Duelists with a focus on evasion, or Chain Duelists with a focus on damage output.
- Dragoon
- The defensive class that combines defense with gunfire, able to deploy Bunkers to draw away enemy fire. Dragoons can specialize into Shield Bearers with a focus on defense, or Cannon Bearers with a focus on firepower.
- Pugilist
- Fighters which can disable enemies with well-aimed punches, or trade their health for greater damage output. Pugilists can specialize into Barrage Brawlers with a focus on multi-hit skills and binding enemies, or Impact Brawlers that trade more HP for higher damage potential.
- Harbinger
- Reapers who can inflict ailments to rows of enemies, and have a unique Miasma Armor buff that improves their speed and is required for some of their support skills. Harbingers can specialize into Deathbringers with a focus on ailment infliction, or Deathguards with a focus on Miasma support skills.
- Warlock
- The quintessential elemental magic damage specialist. Warlocks can specialize into Omnimancers who can exploit physical weaknesses with occasional ailment infliction, or Elemancers who put out more raw elemental damage.
- Necromancer
- Necromancers are focused on summoning Wraiths into battle, either for offense or defense. They can also detonate their Wraiths for powerful attacks on enemies. Necromancers can specialize into Spirit Evokers with a focus on summoning multiple Wraiths, or Spirit Brokers that have proactive attacks that call in tougher Wraiths.
- Masurao
- Katana-wielding front line attackers that deal a lot of damage but are lightly armored. Masurao can specialize into Blade Dancers that can wield up to four katanas for a flurry of attacks, or Blade Masters which deal critical hits with a single blade.
- Rover
- These hunters come with an animal companion (or two) that can be renamed, and command their companions in tandem with their bow skills. Rovers can specialize into Flying Falcons which use their Hawk for damage output, or Hunting Hounds which use their Hound for support.
- Shaman
- Shamans use their communion with the divine to aid their party with buffs. Shamans can specialize into Divine Oracles that can dispel buffs for support or offense, or Divine Heralds that have a wider variety of support and healing.
- Botanist
- Botanists use their expertise with plants to heal their allies or inflict ailments to their enemies. Their ailment infliction skills also impose a debuff that exposes the enemy to the same ailment to make repeat attempts easier. Botanists can specialize into Merciful Healers with a focus on healing, or Graced Poisoners with a focus on ailments.
