The Overlord's throne is a teleporter that leads to the floating islands surrounding the Heavenly Keep. Host to some of the Overlord's most dangerous creations, the Forbidden Wood is not meant for humans to traverse; on first visit, only a small section of 26F and 27F are accessible, and the "God's Key" that locks away the rest of the stratum cannot be touched until the seal protecting it is undone with Canaan's assistance. A series of quests surrounding the Foul Grail need to be undertaken before the God's Key can be pulled out, releasing the Golem and finally activating the inactive teleporter near the start of 26F.
The "stairs" linking the floors of the stratum are teleporters that lead back and forth across the floating islands, and the Forbidden Wood itself proves difficult to navigate, with teleporters that can change their destination based on the time of day, a massive swath of damage tiles, and a giant one-way passage maze. The final floor is devoid of random encounters, but the party is forced into an automatic encounter every time they open one of its doors. At the very end is the Overlord's deadliest creation, the End-Bringer, who is said to be the origin of the monsters that populate the labyrinth.

Quests
Blood for the grail
- It's another request for yeh lot. I know the place, but I dunno the details.
- Unlock: Complete mission "Castle and the Grail", then agree to help Minister Dubois explore the bonus stratum and learn more of the winged ones
- Reward: Nectar III
Meet Canaan near the stairs going down at B21F, and tell him the truth about the Overlord that his people worship. Agree to cooperate with him to learn of his purpose.
If you've completed "The second grail" and have the Foul Grail in your possession, he'll instruct you to fill it with the blood of FOEs. Kill 6 FOEs (regardless of their strength) to fill the Foul Grail, and return it to Canaan, who will proceed to 27F to prepare to break the seal that locks away the rest of the Forbidden Wood.
After turning in the quest, return to the small section of 27F that you can access. Canaan will break the seal, and you can remove the sword lodged in the end of the room. It will fall all the way down to 1F, and you're attacked by the Golem. Once you defeat it, return to 26F, dart past the active Asterios, and use the now-active teleporter to begin exploration of the rest of the stratum.
The item trade IV
- Sitoth Trading requests that you retrieve some materials in order for them to create new equipment.
- Unlock: 26F, complete "An ethical dilemma"
- Reward: Medica IV
After you accept this quest, a loud crash of lightning sounds outside. Get out to the city center to see Marion attending to the wounded. Marion wants you to confirm the cause of this disaster.
First, finish the quest "Imminent destruction" which becomes available after starting this quest. Once you've turned it in, return to Canaan on 20F, who will also give you the Gold Book. This is what is needed to complete the quest.
Yggdrasil's exterminators
- We found the beast that was causing the disease! Please defeat it before the whole Labyrinth dies!
- Unlock: 26F, complete "Outpatient treatment"
- Reward: Soma III
Speak to Dr. Stiles who informs you of that he has located the Invader nest on 18F C-3. Slaughter five Invaders to complete the quest. You also receive the Ygg Staff, one of the strongest staves in the game, in addition to the usual quest rewards.
Monarchy's restoration
- If you give me a Knight and a Pawn, I might consider giving you a King.
- Unlock: 26F, complete "The opposing one"
- Reward: Soma III
There's no reason to have two Kings, but you're advised to trade the extra King for something else. Abigail will inform you of someone in possession of a chess piece, but they're up on 25F.
Meet the guard within the Overlord's throne room and he'll point out that he's lost his map among the higher branches of the Yggdrasil. You need a Dark Hunter with at least level 8 Whips to retrieve the map, and in return he offers to trade his Rook and Knight for your King. Do so, turn the quest in, and your current chess collection should be a King, Rook, and Bishop.
The white blade's gleam
- A landsknecht wants you to bring his axe to a sharpener who dwells in the Labyrinth.
- Unlock: Collect the Ruin Sword that's fallen to 1F, after defeating the Golem
- Reward: Hamao II
You're given the Steel Axe and must take it to the weapon sharpener at 21F. He's at sector D-5, in the 2x3 room with 1-tile conveyors going in and out. The fee is 1000en and a True Soul (obtained from killing Armormen on 25F with a bash attack). While he's working, you have to spend 24 hours on 21F without leaving, after which he'll return the sharpened Steel Axe. He also takes interest in the Ruin Sword in your possession...
Imminent destruction
- The treasure vault of the winged ones has been damaged, and their ancient treasures are in danger.
- Unlock: 27F, accept "The item trade IV"
- Reward: Soma II
You have a letter that reads "I await in the holy city on the 20th floor". Meet with Canaan on 20F, who states that the winged ones are under attack by Klanvaline, aka the Dragon. Show him the letter and he will task you with recovering the winged one's treasures from a vault on 21F, sector D-1. Retrieve a Wing Cache from the vault and bring it back to Canaan without anyone dying. Do this two more times; on the third, you'll have to choose between retrieving an Angel Box or rescuing an injured winged one. Your choice will affect the dialogue you get from Canaan but not change the rewards from this quest.
Bonds of promotion
- There are some things I need... If you bring them to me, I'll give you a Pawn in return.
- Unlock: 27F, complete "Monarchy's restoration"
- Reward: Nectar III
Bring the miner 3 Cat's Eyes and 2 Star Rocks (from mining in the 6th Stratum), and 2 Shine Rocks (from mining in the 5th Stratum). After completing this quest, your collection should be King, Rook, Bishop and Pawn.
Ancient politics
- I have the Queen. If you're willing to trade the rest of the set, I may be interested.
- Unlock: Complete "Bonds of promotion"
- Reward: Hamao III
You have an in-game 3-hour limit to finish this quest.
Speak to Minister Dubois who informs you of a message addressed to your guild. Meet with Canaan at his usual spot on 20F. He'll hand you a Knight to round off the set. Return to town quickly and hand in all your pieces to finally get the Queen and complete "The beautiful Queen" quest from way earlier in the game.
Old scars, flaring anew
- There's a problem with rising geotherms on the second Stratum. Can someone investigate?
- Unlock: 27F, complete "The white blade's gleam"
- Reward: Soma II
You'll be asked to investigate geotherms on 6F. You can speak to Marion for more information, but she's initially reluctant to spill until you press the matter three times. She speaks of her past, and how her party went on an expedition beyond a secret entrance on 6F, which left her as the only survivor with a scar as a reminder of that event.
You have to traverse the secret area, starting from unlocking the door with the Tree Key on 9F. The secret area leads all the way to the southern area of 6F, a large corridor with one-way passages linking several large rooms together. Aim for the room in the southeast corner and retrieve the Red Tablet in the center of that room.
Bring the Red Tablet to Marion to learn of her mission, then turn in the completed quest.
Chasing the dream
- The guild I hired hasn't returned. Hurry and bring me the Ruin Sword.
- Unlock: Complete "Old scars, flaring anew"
- Reward: Amrita III
This comes from the weapon sharpener on 21F. You're also informed to collect 6 Black Cores (from killing King Gels) and the Red Tablet from the previous quest. Have all the materials on hand and meet him in the same location you met him. He'll immediately sharpen the Ruin Sword into the Red Sword, also known as the "God's Key".
An ambassador's plea
- This one's from the Grand Duchy. They want yeh to give this letter to the chief of the winged ones.
- Unlock: Complete "Chasing the dream"
- Reward: Nectall II
Speak to Minister Dubois who gives you Documents to foster an allegiance with the winged ones. Approach Harpuia's arena on 20F, and you'll hear the winged ones are clashing with a Call Ape. Defeat it, hand Canaan the documents, and he'll give you a Tree Bud as a show of peace. Return to town and turn in the completed quest.
A life in the balance
- The innkeeper's daughter is lost! Find her, quickly!
- Unlock: 27F, complete "Easing the pain"
- Reward: 100,000en
Quona is missing, and Hanna's heard she's gone to make a new accessory. Head to 14F A-4 where you last escorted her, but she'll be abducted. Chase the kidnapper down to the secret area in the northeast corner of 13F, and defeat the Drake. You also get the Ice Vines, one of the strongest whips in the game.
The waiting Wyvern
- We have located the ultimate gun, but a dangerous dragon lives there. If you want the gun, take the quest!
- Unlock: 27F, complete "A diviner's tools"
- Reward: 100,000en
Cass reports from Guild Esbat that their target is on 2F. It's in the secret area unlocked by the Tree Key, in the southeast corner. Guild Esbat will meet you just before this and give some backstory on the gun. Defeat the Wyvern and also collect the Agnea, one of the strongest guns in the game.
Charity to monsters
- We've found the monster's child! Hurry and return it to its nest!
- Unlock: 28F, complete "Beyond the depths"
- Reward: Hamao III
The Huelord nest is located in a hidden room on 24F. The secret passage is found along the corridor in sector E-5. Defeat it, and the berserk monster appears to deliver the coup de grace herself. You obtain the Claw of Bonds, one of the strongest claws in the game.
The ancient blade
- I must speak with [guild]. Have them contact me when they see this.
- Unlock: 28F, complete "An ambassador's plea"
- Reward: Axcela II
This quest comes from both the duchy and Canaan, and you need access to the Drake's and Dragon's arenas first. Bring the Red Sword to both arenas, and it will absorb the energies of both atmospheres to transform into the God Sword.
Premonition of battle
- Some guards have gotten themselves in trouble up in the castle! Go see what's going on.
- Unlock: 28F, complete "The second grail"
- Reward: Axcela II
Head to the door to the boss room on 25F to get a cut scene with a message that says, "28, Warp 33, Weft 17". These are coordinates, using the full grid system of the map. The message is sending you to 28F sector D-7, in the southeast corner of that room.
The volt king's rampage
- Ancient documents have revealed the location of the "throne of thunder"! Please defeat the golden dragon!
- Unlock: 28F, complete "The item trade IV"
- Reward: 100,000en
With the help of the Gold Book, the "throne of thunder" has been pinpointed at the secret area of the 4th Stratum. A hidden passageway unlocks on the north side of 18F, leading into sector A-4. Follow it into the northeast corner of sector A-7 and defeat the Dragon.
After the Dragon's initial defeat, it gets up, and one of the following ensues:
- If you didn't save the baby monster in "An ethical dilemma", Canaan personally arrives to deliver the coup de grace.
- If you saved the monster but don't have a Survivalist in the party, the monster will give its life in taking down the Dragon.
- If you saved the monster and have a Survivalist in the party, Canaan will hand your Survivalist the Divide Bow who delivers the finishing blow, sparing the monster.
Regardless of outcome Divide Bow will be yours to keep, as one of the strongest bows in the game.
Crimson vengeance
- We have a situation! Come talk to me as soon as yeh see this!
- Unlock: 29F, complete "The ancient blade"
- Reward: 100,000en
Cass reports the God Sword's gone missing, but the duchy didn't ask to transfer the sword to them. Someone from the Explorers Guild has requested for it, but Marion's not home, and Abigail can only report that she said "I'm going to the Vermillion King's resting place to put my past behind me."
Return to the location where you found the Red Plate. Marion's rendered helpless when the God Sword shatters, and you have to battle the Wyrm yourself. After its defeat, the Tree Bud transforms into the Ygg Sword, one of the strongest swords in the game.
The best-laid plans
- We're planning a mission to explore the newly discovered east end of the 28th floor, and need a survivalist.
- Unlock: 29F, complete "Premonition of battle"
- Reward: Nectall II
Bring a level 50 or higher Survivalist to the bar. No bonus rewards for this one.
Shadow of the castle
- It seems a monster is waiting beyond the hidden path on the 28th floor. Someone must investigate this.
- Unlock: 30F, complete "The best-laid plans"
- Reward: 100,000en
Speak to Minister Dubois and refuse his offer to give up the request. He'll speak of Briareus, which has claimed many adventurers and guards. Return to the corner of the room in 28F D-7 and a secret passage opens up. This leads to a series of teleporters which each ask you a question. Answer Yes → No → No to proceed through the passages that comprise the last uncharted inches of the floor. Answering wrongly reduces one party member's HP to 1.
Speak its name and get transported into the uncharted central room, and defeat the Briareus. Defeating the monster also earns you Hyuga, one of the strongest katanas in the game.
